13 Mar Relaxers, Pixie Cuts, and Healthy Hair: A Professional Stylist’s Perspective
Want smoother hair? Less frizz? Easier manageability in your daily routine?

These are some of the most common conversations clients bring into the salon.
For many years, relaxers were one of the most common services offered in professional salons. Today the conversation around relaxers is very different. There are more questions, more awareness, and even lawsuits that have caused many people to reconsider how they approach chemical straightening.
Having worked in the beauty industry since the 1990s, I have seen the relaxer conversation evolve dramatically. What has never changed for me is this simple goal: healthy hair.
The most important thing is education and making informed decisions about what works best for your hair.
Why I Was Selective About Relaxer Systems
Throughout my career I have always been very careful about the relaxer systems used in the salon. Not all relaxers perform the same, and not every formula supports the long-term health of the hair.
My focus was always on relaxer systems that helped maintain the integrity of the hair while improving manageability. Many professional relaxers stylists once relied on have since been discontinued or reformulated as the industry continues to evolve.
Today the conversation is less about promoting a particular relaxer and more about determining whether relaxing the hair is the right choice for each individual client.
Understanding What Relaxers Actually Do
A relaxer works by permanently altering the internal structure of the hair strand so tightly curled or coily hair becomes straighter.
For some people this can make daily styling easier and help them achieve the look they prefer.
For others, maintaining their natural curl pattern is the better option.
Both choices are valid. Healthy hair can exist in manyforms.
Who May Be a Good Candidate for a Relaxer
Relaxers can still be appropriate for some individuals when applied correctly and maintained properly.
A good candidate for a relaxer is typically someone who:
• prefers smoother or straighter hair
• finds tightly coiled or dense hair difficult to manage daily
• understands the maintenance required for relaxed hair
• commits to regular professional salon visits
Relaxers should always be applied by a trained professional who understands scalp protection, timing, and proper application techniques.
When a Relaxer May Not Be the Best Option
There are situations where relaxing the hair may not be the healthiest option.
For example, relaxers may not be recommended for hair that is:
• heavily bleached or lightened
• extremely fragile or already breaking
• experiencing excessive shedding
• overprocessed from previous chemical services
In these situations the priority should be strengthening and restoring the hair before considering additional chemical services.
Proper Application Matters
Many of the problems historically associated with relaxers come from improper application. Overlapping previously relaxed hair, leaving relaxer on too long, or failing to maintain the hair properly between services can lead to breakage.
Professional technique, timing, and proper aftercare make a significant difference in maintaining healthy hair.
Relaxers are not a service that should ever be rushed or performed without a thorough consultation.
Maintenance Is Essential
Relaxed hair requires ongoing care in order to remain healthy.
This includes:
• scheduled professional touch-ups
• deep conditioning treatments
• moisture and strengthening support
• protecting previously relaxed hair from overprocessing
Consistency between salon visits is just as important as the service itself.
Natural Hair, Relaxed Hair, and Personal Choice
Over the past decade the natural hair movement has encouraged many people to embrace their curls, coils, and natural textures.
At the same time, some individuals still prefer the smoothness and manageability of relaxed hair.
Others choose alternatives such as silk presses or smoothing treatments that temporarily loosen the curl pattern without permanently altering the hair.
One style that has become increasingly popular again is the pixie cut.
A well-designed pixie cut can be incredibly chic, modern, and easy to maintain, especially for busy professionals. For many clients, a pixie cut offers a fresh start for their hair, particularly if they are transitioning away fromchemical services or simply want a style that requires less daily styling.
A great pixie cut is all about precision and understanding the natural movement of the hair. When done correctly, it can highlight your features and create a polished look that works beautifully in both professional and social settings.
There is no single right answer when it comes to how you wear your hair.
Some people choose natural curls. Some prefer relaxed hair. Others enjoy the versatility of short, tailored styles like a pixie.
The best choice is the one that supports the health of your hair and fits your lifestyle.
Consultation Is Everything
Before any chemical service is performed, a professional consultation is essential.
During a consultation we evaluate several important factors, including:
• hair type and curl pattern
• hair density and porosity
• elasticity and overall hair strength
• previous color or chemical services
This evaluation helps determine whether relaxing the hair is appropriate or whether another approach would better support long-term hair health.
The Goal Has Always Been Healthy Hair
In my chair, the conversation has never been about forcing someone into a particular trend. The goal is always healthy hair that works for your lifestyle and how you want to show up in the world.
Whether your hair is natural, relaxed, curly, coily, pressed, textured, or styled into a precision pixie cut, strong healthy hair should always be the foundation.
At Signature Image Salon in Washington DC’s historic U Street Corridor, our focus is helping clients understand their hair and choose services that support its long-term health.
Every head of hair is different, and the right decision always begins with athoughtful consultation.
